What happened to Megaupload
Megaupload was shut down on 19 January 2012, when the US Department of Justice unsealed a criminal indictment and the FBI seized its servers and domain names. It never returned. The files stored on it were not preserved, and no one can recover them — not Kim Dotcom, not this site, and not any service claiming otherwise.
Mega (mega.nz) is a different company, launched a year later by the same founder, and holds none of Megaupload’s data. As of July 2026, Kim Dotcom has lost his final Court of Appeal challenge against extradition to the United States. Read the full history, or see the FAQ.
megaupload.nz is an unofficial recreation of the pre-2012 interface. It has never hosted user files and has no upload facility. If you came here to move a file today, the routes below compare the services that actually do that job.
